Below is a piece I wrote for Wabash Magazine.
CABIN FEVER COLLECTIVE // 1669 BLOOR STREET WEST
In need of a little artistic inspiration? Cabin Fever is like a one-stop culture hub. It is part bar, part café, part gallery and part record store. After 11AM, nobody can blame you for switching from brewed tea to craft brews.
CHERRY BOMB COFFEE // 79 RONCESVALLES AVENUE
Cherry Bomb is largely a grab ‘n go place so don’t be discouraged by the line-up at this popular neighborhood joint. But that’s okay, you probably don’t want to be seen chowing down their chocolate oatmeal cookie à la Cookie Monster in public anyways, not that you’d be the only one…
COFFEE & ALL THAT JAZZ // 72 HOWARD PARK AVENUE
If you’re looking for some gin and juice, you’re in the wrong spot but those who want to mellow out to some brass tunes in the background can turn to this retro café lined with red and beige checkered floors while sipping a cup of java. Of all the cafés in the neighborhood, we daresay this one has one of the more extensive food offerings – sandwiches, salad, soup, and of course a selection of baked goods to satisfy your sweet tooth.
EXTRA BUTTER COFFEE // 283 RONCESVALLES AVENUE
No this is not a nod to the crazy butter coffee trend that’s catching on. It is a nod to Dark City Roaster’s eponymous Extra Butter Coffee. A perfect place to plug in and get some work done especially if you grab the $5 “hangout special” – it’s the equivalent of a bottomless buffet where as long as you’re there, you can get a limitless fill of drip coffee.
HULA GIRL ESPRESSO // 2473 DUNDAS STREET WEST
Sip a part of paradise at this Ossington joint as all of their coffees are blended with Extra Fancy Kona coffee that Hawaii is famed for. If the caffeine-jolt isn’t enough for you, then the sugar rush from their “crowbars” – a croissant with a baked-in chocolate bar ought to do the trick.
KITTEN & THE BEAR // 1574 QUEEN STREET WEST
If you loved PB&J sandwiches as a child, you will love Kitten & the Bear. This quaint shop makes seasonal preserves such as apricot whisky so you can indulge your inner child. They also offer a mini afternoon tea service where you can savor their artisan jams alongside freshly baked scones made in-house using double churned butter. Slather it with some Devonshire clotted cream and sip on teas from Sloane Fine Tea. Pinkies up!
LIT ESPRESSO BAR // 221 RONCESVALLES AVENUE
Lit is a great place to sit back and hang out. Its décor is rustic-chic. The music is never too loud. We highly recommend a latte or cappuccino even if it’s just for the eye candy (read, foam art). If the coffee is the star here, then their grilled panins are a close understudy.
OUTPOST COFFEE ROASTERS // 1578 BLOOR STREET WEST
Owner Troy Kelly started roasting his own coffee beans to fuel him through university without breaking the piggy bank. He takes his coffee seriously. Outpost is to coffee connoisseurs as Bar Volo is to beer snobs, featuring single-origin coffees from Brazil, Columbia and Mexico to name a few. We say skip the lattes, cappuccinos and watered down Americanos and just have a cup of good, old-fashioned drip coffee.
